Fasting & Prayer Outline 2022
21 Days of Prayer & Fasting
At the beginning of each year, the Church of God in Ontario embarks on a 21-day prayer and fast; with the sole purpose of bringing its members together for personal renewal and corporate revival in all of our churches and our country. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be doing things a bit differently this year.
However, there is no better way to set the construct for a new calendar year than to give ourselves over to God as we seek His heart, mind and will for each of us individually and collectively.
For New Beginnings Community Church our season of Prayer & Fasting as we start 2022 is about seeking God for the coming year, our church and our community.
It will begin on January 10th at 5:00 am and it will end on January 30th with us sharing the Lord’s Supper at the end of our worship service.
We believe that the power of our church is in the power of our prayer. Our theme for 2022 is as it was in 2021, ReCommit-ReFocus-ReAlign.
Every day during this time of fasting and prayer we will meet for corporate prayer at 5:00 – 6:30 am and 7:00 – 8:00 pm on Zoom.
Join us as we enter 2022 in a posture of prayer. We’re focused on time with God, desiring to connect with Him and get a fresh revelation of His goodness and His plans.
(If you’re out and about at that time or you may be scheduled for work, feel free to connect with just audio so that you can listen in and pray along.) Use the link below – You may want to save it somewhere for quick access each morning as it will remain the same.

You can read how you can prepare for this 21-day journey in the section below entitled Steps to Prepare for Prayer & Fasting.
What is Fasting?
Fasting is defined as denying oneself of something common, normal and necessary. It is abstaining from food for a period of time, all with a spiritual goal in mind. It is during this time of fasting and prayer that we empty ourselves in order to fill it with God’s presence and experience greater communion with Him.
Fasting is one of the most powerful spiritual disciplines of all the Christian disciplines. It is a way to align our hearts with God’s.
Fasting is temporary abstinence from food (solid or liquid, but not water) for a period of time, in order to intensify our expression of a need for something greater, namely God and his work in our lives. By fasting, we set something aside to concentrate, intensify, and contend for something that is more important.
The Purpose of Fasting
There are many purposes of fasting and many rewards to reap from it. The primary purpose of fasting centres on God. It must be God-initiated and God-ordained. The primary purpose then is to glorify God and love and adore Him, and as a result, become more like Him.
There are many secondary purposes, such as increased effectiveness of prayer, subduing the flesh in order to be empowered by the Spirit, guidance in decisions, deliverance for those in bondage, physical well-being, revelations, victory over a specific sin and so on.
Steps to Prepare for 21 Days of Prayer & Fasting
To get the most out of this fast, it’s important that you prepare both spiritually and practically. We encourage you to follow these steps in order to be as well prepared as you can.
Here is our advice on how to prepare:
- If you have any health issues, dietary restrictions or are on medication, then we recommend that you talk to your physician before you attempt a fast and follow their advice.
- Although fasting is primarily a spiritual discipline, it begins in the physical realm. You should not fast without specific physical preparation.
- If you plan on fasting for several days, you will find it helpful to begin by eating smaller meals before you abstain altogether. Resist the urge to have that “last big feast” before the fast. Cutting down on your meals a few days before you begin the fast will signal your mind, stomach and appetite that less food is acceptable.
- Some health professionals suggest eating only raw foods for two days before starting a fast. I also recommend weaning yourself off caffeine and sugar products to ease your initial hunger or discomfort at the early stages of your fast.
- Before you begin this season of prayer and fasting, examine your heart through prayer and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any unconfessed sin. In your prayers, confess not only the obvious sins that come to mind, but allow yourself to linger in His presence, giving Him time to show you the less obvious ones as well. You may want to ask God if you are experiencing any of these signs of leaving your first love: worldly-mindedness, self-centeredness, spiritual indifference, unwillingness to share your faith in Christ with others, not spending sufficient time in God’s Word and in prayer, a poor relationship with your spouse, your children, your friends, or other members of your church community.
- Come with an expectant heart and trust that God will answer your prayers and the longings of your heart.
MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR TIME OF PRAYER
A FEW SIMPLE TIPS:
You’ll likely find it helpful to establish a routine during these weeks of focused prayer.
- HAVE A CERTAIN TIME.
Jesus got up early in the morning to spend time with His Father. Make a daily appointment with God — whether it’s first thing in the morning, at lunch, or in the evening. Set an alarm, and keep it.
- HAVE A CERTAIN PLACE.
Jesus had a specific place He went to pray. Having a certain place to pray helps to remove distractions and frees us to listen, to worship and to pray out loud.
- HAVE A CERTAIN PLAN.
When Jesus taught His followers how to pray, He gave them a prayer outline. We call it “The Lord’s Prayer.” As we pray each day our words and plans may shift, but set aside time to:
- Pause: Be still and be present.
- Rejoice: Worship, honour and thank God for who He is and what He’s done.
- Ask: Present your requests to God – for others and for yourself.
- Yield: Surrender, confess, listen.
